There hasn't been a nation-wide study on the most popular Pick 3 play types, and to complicate things, each state has slightly varying rules and terminology for their own play types. The three main ones though, which we would predict are the most popular, are:
- Straight: Also known as Exact Order, this play type can be won by matching the three digits in exactly the order they're drawn.
- Box: Also known as Any Order, players win prizes by matching their three digits in any order. Picking duplicate digits for this play type reduces the odds of winning, but increases the prize!
- Straight/Box: This play type splits the player's bet in two, with half going on a Straight and half on a Box. Match in exact order and you'll win ½ the value of the Straight prize, and ½ the value of the Box prize. Match in any other order, and you'll just win the half-Straight prize.
There are some states where it's possible to win more by wagering a higher amount, or using their optional add-ons. In most cases though, the biggest prize in Pick 3 is $500, which you can win by matching all three numbers in order on a Straight ticket on a $1 wager.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. One big advantage of playing online is that your tickets are stored digitally. This means it's impossible for them to get lost, damaged, or stolen. They also get checked automatically as soon as the winning numbers are available!
